Since 2018 there has been legal recognition of non-binary gender identities in Germany. The idea of multiple genders, on the other hand, has a long tradition. In Plato’s Symposium, his philosophical reflections on love, the original form of human beings is described in the »Speech of Aristophanes«: as four-armed spherical beings, which formerly existed in three sexes, they were finally separated by the gods and since then have longed to be reunited with them their other half, different sexual identities and orientations coexist on an equal footing.

In the scenic composition 4 Hände by CHEN Chengwen + Tobias Klich, two musicians are shown on only one instrument, which merge into a single, four-handed being. The three works for guitar, cello and accordion are set in a dialogue with excerpts from Plato’s Symposium.

What does it mean to cooperate in such a small space? What impulses could this model provide for social, symbiotic forms of cooperation? Or for new forms of love?
