The pair of cymbals from the Asian theater tradition found its way into European military and orchestral music in the 18th century, but is usually perceived in an extremely reduced way as a marker of rhythm or as an illustration of brilliant climaxes. The composition »Libra« elicits completely unfamiliar worlds of sound from this apparently familiar instrument through various types of rubbing, beating and scratching, and in this way even makes it “sing” by stimulating individual overtones, and finally the well-known orchestral cymbal crash in a completely different way to hear and perceive. With the image of Libra – in the constant process of sonic balancing – this piece embarks on a search for the unknown in the seemingly familiar.
